“Notes on Healing” explores various stages on the spectrum of healing — loss, grief, anger, acceptance, forgiveness, lightness, closure, joy, and everything in between.

St. Paul, MN – Upcoming art exhibit, Notes on Healing, uses visual art and sound to explore the space between violence and healing in BIPOC communities. When there is always another loss, another tragedy, how do we move forward? When we are faced with continual violence against land, body, and truth, how can we heal?

The group show will have Opening Night on Friday, September 30th from 6:00-8:00 PM and a healing themed Open Mic on Friday, October 14th from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. Visit the Friedli Gallery and Studio website for information on additional planned activities: https://www.friedliartsgallery.com/events-calendar.

The original concept and curation for Notes on Healing was created by author Elizabeth Ash in direct response to Blood on the Pavement, a poetry and art exhibit she curated in May 2022 to discuss violence against Black bodies. Ash hopes to expand on this conversation, using Notes on Healing to acknowledge the shared wounds of BIPOC communities throughout Minnesota, and the ways those wounds echo throughout the country, while moving towards healing.

When BIPOC communities are so often denied the space for rest and recovery, healing becomes a radical and resilient act.

Notes on Healing will feature the following local MN artists: Wenwen Liao, A Drew Hammond, Azania Tripp, Beverly Tipton-Hammond, Jose Trejo-Maya, Pasakura Lee, Christina Vang, Nina Holding Eagle-Bushaw, Michelle Defoe, Steve Ozone, Nalima Mwassa, and Ron Brown.

To deepen the experience and conversation, award-winning Twin Cities musician J.D. Steele has composed music and sound interpretations of the artwork. J.D. Steele is the director of the MacPhail Community Youth Choir (MCYC); a member of the dynamic vocal group, The Steeles; and has written, produced, performed, and recorded with Prince, Mavis Staples, and many other artists.

Notes On Healing will also be participating in the 2022 St. Paul Art Crawl from October  7  –  9. The exhibit closes on Saturday, October 29th at 5:00 PM.
