Hope Flanagan is the Community Outreach and Cultural Teacher at Dream of Wild Health, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring health and well-being in the Native community by recovering knowledge of and access to healthy Indigenous foods, medicines, and lifeways. Hope is Noodinesiikwe (Little Wind Woman) from the turtle clan. She comes from the people of Tonawanda, Seneca Reservation.

“We Are Still Here” Moves into its third year in a new location. Featuring native artists from across Turtle Island, “We Are Still Here” brings to the fore the life, histories and politics of what it means to be Indigenous in the 21st Century.

This show is juried by local indigenous artists, elders and community leaders.

Shuan Chosa gives an artist talk and Q&A about his work. Shaun will talk about his show “Sacred Klown” at Friedli Gallery, as well as answering any questions you may have!

Join Duluth artist Lin Rose on a one-day plein air adventure on the Superior Hiking Trail!

Bring your plein air painting & sketching supplies and join us for a day on the trail at two distinct locations: Temperance River State Park followed by Cascade River State Park! This activity is a meet and greet for artists who enjoy working in the great outdoors. Every level of experience welcome to this Leave No Trace friendly event! Our goal is to make this event accessible, so we will be finding scenic locations on the Superior Hiking Trail close in to the trailhead as to maximize our time working on art and allow people of all hiking abilities to join.

We plan to meet at the Temperance River Trailhead Parking on HWY 61 at 10am. Link to Map HERE where we will then head to the Hidden Falls Trailhead West. We will then hike into the Temperance River Gorge and decide on our scenic location to work.

Our Second Location will be Cascade River State Park starting at 2pm. We will Park at the Cascade River Parking on Hwy 61. Link to map HERE where we will then head up the Superior Hiking Trail to decide on our scenic location to work. *Note- these maps are for denoting parking and trailhead locations only and not representative of the routes we intend to hike.

Please bring your own art supplies as well as a daypack with necessary items to work outside! Some items we recommend you bring include:

Shaun Chosa lives and paints in Ely, Minnesota. He has 2 cats, Khalil and Freyja. He loves music, art, movies, and animals of all types. He has been at times been a Firefighter, First Responder, Disk Jockey, an Infantry Marine, a Reverend Minister, Wolf Handler and a Concert Promoter. He spends his time creating graphics for a t-shirt company and doing fine art on the side.

The closing reception for Grand Tour will be an opportunity for attendees to interact with the soil organs and for participants from the August 19 workshop to display their work. Clare Louis Harmon will be there to talk about her work and answer any questions in regards to this exhibition and workshop.

Clare Harmon will lead a creative translation workshop from 1-3. In this workshop, participants will be invited to think broadly about translation not just as a conduit between two languages, but also as a bridge between multiple systems of meaning (visual, aural, linguistic, etc). This two-hour workshop will be divided into three sections. In the first 20 minutes, Clare will give an overview of translation theory and how it is used in experimental poetics. Next, participants will be guided through a translation exercise in which they will translate an idea from one system of meaning (e.g., words) to another (e.g., images). At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to share and reflect on their experience and what they have produced. Participants will leave the workshop with their translation and a short guidebook, written by Clare, on intersemiotic translation exercises. All participants will be invited to exhibit their translations during the closing exhibition on August 26.

No prior knowledge or experience is required for participation, but participants are encouraged to bring a favorite poem or quotation with which they would like to experiment. Adults and young people are welcome to participate; this workshop is recommended for students of at least 12 years of age. This event is free to attend and participants are encouraged to wear masks if they are able. This is an in-person event and will be held at Friedli Gallery. Due to space constraints, attendance will be limited to 10 participants. Pre-registration is required.

What does it mean to visit a place, to use the photograph as a form of possession? This micro-installation uses handmade ink, a touch-activated soundscape, and the form of the postcard to consider the ways in which a place is “possessed” by the modern tourist. This work considers Susan Sontag’s description of the photograph as a form of possession alongside John Urry’s theory of the tourist’s gaze. In full, the work traces the legacy of the eighteenth-century grand tour to practices of contemporary tourism in Italy and considers the relationship between ecological catastrophe and a modernity that was always unsustainable to itself. Grand Tour uses translation, broadly defined, to comprehend place. This particular iteration uses soil as the basis of visual, sonic, and material representation of a landscape.

The opening reception celebration for Grand Tour will include two performances/activations of the “soil organs,” sculptural electronic instruments made of soil, water, rocks, and thread. These performances will take place at 7:00pm and 7:30pm. At 6:45, Clare Harmon will speak briefly about the exhibition as a whole and its theoretical underpinnings. Attendees are also encouraged to interact with these instruments before and after the performance.

Many implied words hide between the lines.  Vol. 2 Double Space is an exhibition that displays Jacob Z. Wan's conceptual books to explore the intimacy of the LGBTQ experience. As a contemporary bookbinder, Wan uses traditional bound books with handmade paper, book objects, and book installation from bedroom objects to evoke an immersive atmosphere to express the importance of oneself.

Boy and Moonlight explore sexuality, consciousness, and relationships with others and within the self.

This collection of books is made of intimate materials from my bedroom to express my desire and struggle for love as a Chinese gay man. Pillowtalk is a traditionally bound book made with handmade paper that includes pieces of clothes from my boyfriends and found texts from love novels to explore my internal thoughts and longings. Underaware is a mixed-media series of shadowbox “pages” that enclose pairs of men’s underwear. By arranging and displaying the underwear in meaningful positions, the gestures convey the complexities of that particular relationship and how it has shaped my demand, understanding, and perspective of love. Bedsheets are the most intimate objects we interact with as they contain comforts, physical evidence of identity, and many personal late-night thoughts. Through the use of hand-dyed bedsheets in Overnight, I create a book with pages as a physical maze of bedsheets hanging from the space. The viewers are invited to walk through the book with a sense of “hide and seek” which implies my personal feelings as an LGBTQ+ member.

In Boy and Moonlight, I create an interactive “bedroom” that provides an atmosphere of intimacy, sensitivity, and closeness for viewers to connect to the importance of loving the self.

“As a contemporary bookbinder, I craft conceptual books to explore identity, sexuality, and human relationships from being a Chinese gay man. My mixed media handbound books, book-alike objects, and book installations portray solitude, delineate intimacy, and evoke an immersive atmosphere. By experimenting with the materiality of the page, thread, and cover, I deploy personal memories to celebrate the importance of oneself. 

My books are inspired by introspection, imagination, and compassion. I incorporate image-making and object-making, papermaking, fiber/textile, and other techniques to showcase the desires, tenderness, and fragility of the LGBTQ community with color, mythology, and symbolism. Improvisation helps me to keep the process organically to mimic the subconsciousness, and I adjust the pages by editing, continue by building, and explore by combining. The journey of making a book is similar to puzzling; starting with fragmental ideas and matching them in a meaningful position that leads to a final answer. 

To me, books are expressions of emotions, sequences of consciousness, and collections of moments. A human is a book; the name is the title, the appearance is the cover, and the memories are the pages. I aspire to bring the sense of ceremony of reading a book into my mixed-media book installation; the viewers enter the space like they open a book, and they close the cover when they exit the space for a poetic and intimate experience. Through curating the different forms of books in purposeful locations based on the site structure, I design an implied book that the audience’s walking flows as the thread to bind the pages of books together as a whole. 

Currently, my research focuses on books in expanded fields and gender studies. I explore the materiality and challenge the concept of Book Arts. Through expanding the structure of a book into sculptures, installations, social engagement practice, and time arts, I create conceptual books to foster a comforting utopia for the audience to embrace the vulnerability of otherness.”

Jacob Z. Wan is a contemporary bookbinder who creates mixed-media conceptual books to celebrate the importance of oneself. His books have been collected internationally and exhibited in Florida Biennial, International Book Art Exhibition, Germany, and China. Wan has received his BFA and MFA from the University of Central Florida, and he currently resides in Jacksonville, FL.

Join us for a night with esteemed authors Michael Fedo and Klecko as they read from their works followed by a Q&A.

Klecko, the St. Paul baker and Midwest Book Award winner for “Hitman-Baker-Casketmaker: Aftermath of an American’s Clash with ICE” will be reading from his latest book, “The Dead Fitzgeralds.”

Michael Fedo, who tackles hard Minnesota history with his book “The Lynchings in Duluth”. This historical work shines light on the evening of June 15, 1920, in Duluth, Minnesota, when three young black men, accused of the rape of a white woman, were pulled from their jail cells and lynched by a mob numbering in the thousands.
Michael Fedo, a Duluth native, was a correspondent for the New York Times and a professor at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. He is the author of four other books, and his writings have appeared in numerous publications, including the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, and the Christian Science Monitor.
